Today we drive to the ancient capital of Amer, also known as Amber, to visit the fabulous Amer Fort.
Before Jaipur’s City Palace was built, Amer was the seat of power. The fort rises above the landscape, surrounded by fortified walls and overlooking Maota Lake. We will ascend by jeep to the main gate and explore the palace chambers, courtyards, hallways, and decorated rooms that make Amer one of the most impressive forts in Rajasthan.
The town around Amer Fort also has beautiful small temples and the photogenic Panna Meena stepwell, a geometric maze of staircases that shows how even practical structures in Rajasthan could become works of art.
In the evening, we will experience Holika Dahan, the sacred bonfire held on the eve of Holi. This ancient ritual celebrates the victory of devotion and good over evil, and it marks the beginning of the Festival of Colors.
The fire is lit, the excitement builds, and by tomorrow morning, Jaipur will be ready to explode with color. Get some sleep. We are going to need our energy!
